Hans Weber
BAFFIN ISLAND EXPEDITION 1953
In 1953 the Arctic Institute of North America organised an international, interdisciplinary expedition to the area of the Penny Ice Cap on eastern Baffin Island. Hans Weber was one of four Swiss scientists who participated. Hans shot a 16 mm colour film documenting some of the activities of the expedition, providing a unique record of an early stage of modern scientific work in the eastern Arctic. He will introduce and show a recently edited, DVD version of the film.
Born in Thun, Switzerland, Jean-Robert (Hans) Weber graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, Zürich. After the Baffin Island expedition, Hans stayed in Canada, eventually obtaining a Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Alberta in 1960. He then joined the Dominion Obervatory, later to become the Earth Physics Branch of Natural Resources Canada, as a geophysicist. Much of his career was spent in the field, investigating the gravity and seismology of the Canadian Arctic Islands. He was Chief Scientist on LOREX and CESAR, two major projects studying the floor of the Arctic Ocean. Hans retired in 1990.
This meeting is the last regular meeting of the 2008-09 season of The Arctic Circle. It will be held in the Astra Lounge on the entrance level of the RCAF Officers Mess, 158 Gloucester Street (just east of Bank Street), Ottawa. Parking is available on the street and in nearby parking lots. There is a charge of $3.00 for evening use of the parking lot in the same block as the Mess. The meeting begins at 2000 hrs and the bar will be available from 1930 hrs. As always, guests are welcome.
The Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday, April 30. Details and a booking form follow in a separate e-mail.
A healthy, happy and safe summer to all!
