Description
THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
458th Meeting
Tuesday, April 8, 2008
Pascale Roy-Léveillée
FIELD-BASED RESEARCH ON PERMAFROST LANDSCAPES IN NORTHERN YUKON
In response to local interest in improving management of snow-machine access to the caribou-hunting grounds, a research project was initiated by the NSERC Northern Research Chair program at Carleton University to study the effects of topography and vegetation structure on the early winter snow pack in the Blackstone Uplands of the Tombstone region. Pascale conducted more than six months of fieldwork in the Yukon, in part under the terms of a Northern Research Internship, and, in addition to describing the results of her work, will recount her experiences in collaborating with communities and government in the Yukon on a research project directed largely from a southern institution.
Born in Quebec, Pascale Roy-Léveillée moved to the Yukon ten years ago. She obtained a bachelor’s degree at the University of Guelph and a master’s at Carleton University, which was awarded for the work she will describe. Pascale is currently enrolled as a Ph.D. candidate at Carleton, under the supervision of Dr. Chris Burn, who holds the Northern Research Chair in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.
This meeting is the last regular meeting of the 2007-08 season of The Arctic Circle. It will be held in the Astra Lounge on the entrance level of the RCAF Officers Mess, 158 Gloucester Street (just east of Bank Street), Ottawa. Parking is available on the street and in nearby parking lots. There is a charge of $3.00 for evening use of the parking lot in the same block as the Mess. The meeting begins at 2000 hrs and the bar will be available from 1930 hrs. As always, guests are welcome.
The Annual Dinner, with Norman Hallendy as guest-of-honour, will be held on April 24. Details and a booking form are contained in a separate e-mail.
A happy, healthy and safe summer to all!
