Ottawa, Ontario (November 26, 2012)
The Canadian Polar Commission (CPC) is pleased to announce the opening of its new Northern Office on November 26. Located in downtown Yellowknife in the Greenstone Building (5101 50th Avenue), the office will anchor the CPC's presence north of 60o and help advance its mandate by establishing and maintaining relationships with northern communities, organizations, and individuals.
Further, the CPC is pleased to announce that David Miller has joined the Commission as Northern Coordinator, based at the CPC Northern Office. Mr. Miller is an award-winning northern journalist with a strong interest in northern heritage.
"I am very pleased to welcome David to the CPC team," said Commission chairperson Bernard Funston. "His talent, experience, and extensive connections in the North will be invaluable as we use our new office to expand our northern networks and work directly with northerners on issues of importance to them."
Among his responsibilities, Mr. Miller will act as a liaison with northern communities and groups, facilitate contact between researchers and communities, and serve as a link with key policy and decision-makers across the CPC network.
"My 25 years as a northern journalist will help me to feel out northerners on the vital issue of Arctic research," said Mr. Miller. "Journalism is about investigation, synthesis and communication. That places me in kinship with the dedicated researchers and research organizations working on the frontiers of polar knowledge."
Mr. Miller will also assist the Canadian Network of Northern Research Operators (CNNRO). The CNNRO is a pan-northern consortium of support facilities serving research groups in Canada and internationally.
The Canadian Polar Commission is Canada's national institution for furthering polar knowledge and awareness. It does so by maintaining strong networks, providing analysis and synthesis of knowledge, and communicating this knowledge to northerners and all Canadians.
