Local History and Culture: Located at Mile 918 of the historic Alaska Highway, Whitehorse was an important supply centre during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 being situated on the Yukon River. Whitehorse lies in the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dun and Taan Kwachan First Nations. Whitehorse has been the capital of the Yukon Territory since 1953 and currently accounts for almost 3/4 of the territory's population.

Description of Facility: The Yukon Research Centre at Yukon College is developing new research infrastructure. A new lab, collections space, storage and compound will be constructed in 2010. New offices and administrative space opened in August 2009. Yukon College has a large trade’s complex, which houses carpentry, welding, electronics, electrical, and automotive shops. It also has an extensive library and cataloguing system, cafeteria, gymnasium, computer labs, large serviced parking lots, and student and visitor accommodation. It also has the usual complement of classrooms, lecture theatre, and lounges. These facilities support the research center with respect to specialized needs and logistics. The Northern Research Institute provides research grants yearly for research in the yukon.

Laboratory: A new research lab and collections faciltiy will be constructed at Ayamdigut Campus, Yukon College, Whitehorse in 2010 with completion scheduled for March 2011.

Access: Daily jet air service to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Surface access to Whitehorse via the Alaska Highway connecting Yukon with Alaska, B.C. and Alberta. Well maintained network of highways connecting all Yukon Communities with the exception of Old Crow which has regular flight service.

Local Transportation: Taxi service available in Whitehorse. Car, aircraft and boat rentals also avialable in Whitehorse.

Fuel Availability: Various commercial outlets avialable in Whitehorse and communities - diesel, gas, propane.

Land Claims Regime: Whitehorse and the Aymdigut Campus, Yukon College lie in the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dun and Taan Kwachan First Nations.

Research History: The Northern Research Institute was established at Ayamdigut Campus, Yukon College, Whitehorse in 1992. Conceived as a northern centre to promote, coordinate and undertake research that complemented the College's goals to pursue excellence in all areas of Yukon and Northern Studies, it has grown to include a number of programs including the Yukon Research Centre of Excellence (YRCE), Yukon Cold Climate Innovation Centre (YCCIC) and Northern Climate Exchange.
